The role of the Chapter Government Affairs Committee (GAC) is to organize members at the grassroots level to educate local, state, or provincial officials about the built environment. Chapter GACs serve as a local resource for policymakers, advocating for science-based solutions regarding energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and building decarbonization.

Informing local and regional lawmakers on technical issues and providing balanced, objective input on legislation affecting the engineering profession.

Serving as a clearinghouse and local advocate when municipalities consider adopting ASHRAE-developed standards and guidelines.

Training and empowering chapter members to effectively interact with their local government representatives.

Planning and hosting local outreach events to build awareness of ASHRAE’s research, technical resources, and role as a trusted industry partner.

Sharing governmental activity updates and policy briefs from the ASHRAE Government Affairs Office with chapter members while relaying grassroots feedback back to Society leadership.
