The primary role of an ASHRAE Chapter Research Promotion (RP) Chair is to lead local fundraising campaigns. Chapters raise funds to support society-wide ASHRAE research. These campaigns also benefit education programs, student scholarships, the ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI), and Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA)

The RP Committee manages both Society-level and Chapter-level fundraising. For a complete breakdown of roles, procedures, and how to get involved, you can review the ASHRAE RP page

The Local Impact: the research funded by chapter donations forms the foundation of ASHRAE standards, guidelines, and Handbook chapters. It ensures that members have access to modern data and technologies that directly benefit both the HVAC&R industry and global building performance. Chapter volunteers generally coordinate with regional Vice Chairs to align local targets with global objectives

Engaging local members, design firms, contractors, and corporate sponsors to meet annual, chapter-specific fundraising goals.

Educating donors on how funds are distributed. While research is the backbone of the campaign, donations support the following key areas:

  • ASHRAE Research: The primary fund, accounting for millions of dollars in HVAC&R studies.
  • Education & ALI: Funding the development of continuing education courses.
  • Endowed Support: Investing in long-term funds via the ASHRAE Foundation.
  • YEA Programs: Providing leadership and networking training for young professionals.
  • Scholarships: Assisting undergraduate students entering the industry.
  • General/Unrestricted Fund: Supporting general society operations.

Updating the chapter on the tangible impacts of ASHRAE research (e.g., energy efficiency data, indoor air quality standards) and ensuring donors receive proper recognition.
