DESCRIPTION:The objective of the conference is to optimize the utilization of basic energy resources in the major energy consuming sectors in the arid regions of the Arabian Peninsula. \nThe world can no longer sustain its current pattern of energy consumption. With climate change becoming increasingly urgent\, it is imperative that we all adopt effective energy conservation practices. This challenge is even more pressing in regions with high ambient temperatures\, where cooling demands can be extreme—air conditioning alone accounts for up to 70% of energy usage during peak cooling seasons.” \nTo confront this crisis\, we must embrace cleaner alternative energy sources and implement conservation strategies in ways that are open\, inclusive\, and pragmatic. SUMMARY:ASHRAE Regina Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Designing for Northern\, Remote\, and Arctic Communities\nASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer: Niss Feiner \nBuildings designed for northern\, remote\, and Arctic communities face challenges that are fundamentally different from those encountered in southern urban environments. Extreme cold\, prolonged darkness\, thaw-sensitive permafrost\, limited transportation access\, diesel-generated electricity\, and unique water and wastewater infrastructure systems significantly influence mechanical and building design decisions. \nThis presentation introduces the climatic\, geographic\, and infrastructural realities that shape building systems in Canada’s North. Using ASHRAE climate data and real project examples\, attendees will examine how extreme temperature differentials\, limited fuel supply chains\, and high electricity costs affect heating\, ventilation\, and energy strategy. Topics include ventilation preheat requirements\, combustion air implications\, frozen flue-gas risk\, tank-based potable water systems\, tank-based sewage holding and disposal\, utilidor infrastructure\, and the thermal protection of permafrost through raised foundations and thermosyphon systems. \nBeyond technical considerations\, the lecture explores the logistical and economic constraints of remote construction\, including sealift supply chains\, ice roads\, long procurement timelines\, and infrastructure replacement challenges. Attendees will gain insight into how limited access and high material costs demand long-term forecasting\, resilience\, and simplified system strategies. \nImportantly\, the presentation also addresses the cultural and governance context in which engineering work occurs. Northern communities are home to diverse Indigenous Nations with treaty and land claim agreements that directly affect project approval and execution. The lecture highlights the importance of cultural awareness\, engagement with regional governing bodies operating under land claim agreements\, and sensitivity to sustenance lifestyles and local priorities. Jared Larson\, the lead mechanical engineer on the project\, will provide a presentation and tour of the centralized cooling plant and new cooling towers that serve the University of Regina Central Plant. \nPresenter Bio: Jared Larson is a principal mechanical engineer at MacPherson Engineering Inc. with twenty eight years of experience and holds permission to consult through APEGS and APEGA. He has extensive experience in the design and commissioning of mechanical systems for buildings. His responsibilities have encompassed conceptual studies through to construction document production\, provision of services during construction and systems commissioning for projects including residential\, commercial and institutional . He has volunteered with ASHRAE at the local Regina chapter\, served as student activities regional Vice chair for student activities and chaired the student activities committee in 2022. He also served several years as a Sessional Lab Instructor for the ISE ENIN 463 class. (Heating\, Ventilating and Air Conditioning Systems) at the University of Regina. He currently lives in saskatoon where he serves on the ASHRAE Saskatoon Chapter Board of governors\, and as a Student Branch Advisor for the USask Student Branch.
